About the event:
The Turf Battles That Undermine Careers and Companies…And How to Overcome Them: The problem begins when individuals, groups or divisions – out of fear – try to protect their turf and reshape their environment to gain as much control over it as is possible. It stems from the inclination of managers and employees to become fixated on their own activities, their own careers, and their own territory or turf to the detriment of those around them. People who create fiefdoms become dangerously insular, lose their ability to act consistently on behalf of the greater good of the organization, and they hoard resources. In this presentation, Bob will discuss why this happens, and what to do about it.
About the speaker:
Robert J. (Bob) Herbold, retired Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft Corporation, is the Managing Director of Herbold Group, LLC, a consulting practice focused on profitability. Herbold serves on the Board of Directors of Agilent Technologies, ICOS Corporation and First Mutual Bank. In 2001, Herbold was appointed by President Bush to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, where he chairs the Education Subcommittee. Prior to joining Microsoft, Herbold spent 26 years at Procter & Gamble.
Herbold’s experiences at Microsoft and Procter & Gamble were the basis of an article he authored in the January 2002 issue of the Harvard Business Review entitled “Inside Microsoft: Balancing Discipline and Creativity”, recommending strategies that companies could use to improve profitability and agility. Herbold recently authored a book titled “The Fiefdom Syndrome”, which focuses on the turf battles that undermine careers and companies – and how to overcome them.
“The Fiefdom Syndrome” will be available for purchase at the event. It is also widely available at booksellers and is publised by Doubleday.
