“At Stanford, we are not trying to just train physicians, we are trying to change the world”, Dean Pizzo said at a recent seminar. Join fellow Stanford alumni at a small and informal reception with the Dean of the Stanford School of Medicine on Wednesday, 25 February 2009 to find out how the University is indeed doing much more than just training doctors.
Dean Pizzo has led the School of Medicine in taking advantage of emerging technologies, focusing on professional and technical development of students and installing novel programs that have led to ground-breaking strides at the School of Medicine. He has worked with the School of Engineering to set up a joint new bioengineering program, and last year he took the step of restricting corporate funding for research, saying “I want to make sure we’re not marketing for industry or being influenced by their marketing”. Learn how Dean Pizzo sees the future of medicine unfolding and how the School is working to stay at the leading edge of key developments.
Philip A. Pizzo, MD, became dean of the Stanford School of Medicine in April 2001. Before joining Stanford, he was the physician-in-chief of Children’s Hospital in Boston and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Pizzo is recognized for his contributions as a clinical investigator, especially in the treatment of children with cancer and HIV. Pizzo devoted much of his distinguished medical career to the diagnosis, management, prevention and treatment of childhood cancers. Pizzo and his research team pioneered the development of new treatments for children with HIV infection, lengthening and improving the quality of life for children with this disease. He is the author of more than 500 scientific articles and 14 books. He has been cited in Best Doctors of America since 1995.
