DUAL Event – Dinner Talk and Discussion with Ms. Luda Kopeikina on “Start-up Success – What Fuels it at MIT and around Boston Massachusetts”?
The MIT Club of Singapore, in partnership with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)/Exploit Technologies, invites you to a dinner talk and discussion with Ms. Luda Kopeikina, CEO of Noventra Corporation, Director of MIT Enterprise Forum and Lead Catalyst at MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. Ms. Kopeikina will discuss the factors underlying the high start-up success rate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and, more generally, around the Boston area. These parameters, which are the focus of the talk, define the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Boston area and at MIT that fuels this success. The talk will draw on Ms. Kopeikina’s experiences in developing this ecosystem on several fronts. From a start-up investor’s perspective, she will describe her experience as a member of Common Angels – a group of 75 leading private investors that make up Boston’s leading venture capital network.
The opening address of the talk will be given by Mr. Boon Swan Foo, Executive Chairman of Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), the strategic marketing and commercialization arm of A*STAR. Mr. Boon will provide an overview of how Exploit Technologies bridges the R&D and business space here in Singapore, and the various success stories in the Biomedical, Science and Engineering fields so far.

An Evening With Columbia Business School Professor William Duggan – “Stategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement”
The Columbia University Club (Singapore) is pleased to invite DUAL members to an evening with Columbia Business School Professor William Duggan. Professor Duggan will be speaking on “Strategic Intuition: The Creative Spark in Human Achievement” – his most recent book.
When do you get your best ideas? You probably answer “At night,” or “In the shower,” or “Stuck in traffic.” You get a flash of insight. Things come together in your mind. Your brain connects the dots. You say to yourself, “Aha! I see what to do.” Modern brain science now reveals how these flashes of insight happen. It’s a special form of intuition. We call it strategic intuition, because it gives you an idea for action – a strategy.
Modern science tells us there are three kinds of intuition. First, there’s ordinary intuition. That’s just a feeling. Your gut. Second, there’s expert intuition. That means snap judgments, where you instantly recognize something familiar, the way a tennis pro knows where the ball will go from the arc and speed of the opponent’s racket. Basically, practice makes perfect. You get faster at what you do. Malcolm Gladwell wrote about this second kind of intuition in Blink. Third, there’s strategic intuition. It’s not a vague feeling, like ordinary intuition. It’s a clear thought. And it’s not fast, like expert intuition. It’s slow. That flash of insight you had last night might solve a problem that’s been on of your mind for a month. And it doesn’t happen in familiar situations, like a tennis match. Strategic intuition works in new situations. That’s when you need it most. Everyone knows you need creative thinking, or entrepreneurial thinking, or innovative thinking, or strategic thinking, to succeed in the modern world. All these kinds of thinking happen through flashes of insight – strategic intuition. And now that we know how it works, you can learn to do it better.
